Joomla! FAQ

Q: What is Joomla!?
A: Joomla! is a Content Management System (CMS) which can be used for everything from simple websites to complex online applications.

Q: What is a Content Management System (CMS) and how is it different from a regular website?
A: A CMS is an application which runs behind the scenes of a website. Unlike a regular website where the pages are simply built and written by a webmaster or programmer, a CMS provides much more functionality and versatility. For a very good explanation of why every small business should invest in a CMS, you may want to read this article.

By definition, a CMS supports the creation, management, distribution, publishing, and discovery of corporate information. In layman's terms, it is a system that allows the maintenance of a website in an orderly fashion. In addition, depending on the level of the CMS product, it may be intuitive enough to be maintained by a person with little technical knowledge.

Q: What are some advantages that Joomla! provides as a CMS?
A: The list is long and impressive. But here are just a few of the items:
  • Administrative Interface: Powerful and easy to use graphical interface allowing the website to be maintained (i.e. text modified, images added, etc.) by a person with little technical knowledge.
  • Content Display Scheduling: Going out of town but want a store sale announcement to be published on your website while you are away? Joomla! allows designating a date as to when to publish the content.
  • Search Functionality: Add a search box to your website to allow customers to search using keywords.
  • Pluggable Components: Number of components, such as discussion groups (aka forums), picture galleries, event calendar, and many others are available to compliment Joomla's functionality.
  • Authoring vs. Publishing: Allow one person in the company to author/write your website's verbiage, while another person approves and publishes it.
Q: Does Joomla! have any requirements? Will it work with my website hosting company?
A: Joomla's main requirements are that the site be hosted on a Linux or Unix system, support PHP, and provide at least one mySQL database.

Q: What is the cost of Joomla?
